2月22日は「猫の日」です。理由はとても日本らしいもの。数字の「2」を「にゃん」と読む語呂合わせから、「にゃん・にゃん・にゃん」で猫の日になりました。日本では、数字の読み方を使った語呂合わせがよく見られます。11月22日の「いい夫婦の日」、8月29日の「焼肉の日」など、言葉遊びのような発想が文化の中に溶け込んでいます。猫の日もそのひとつです。では、猫の鳴き声は世界共通なのでしょうか。日本では「にゃー」と表しますが、英語では 「meow」、中国語では「miāo」と書きます。同じ猫の声でも、言語によって表現が異なるのは興味深いですね。人は、自分の言語の音に合わせて動物の鳴き声を表現しています。

February 22 is “Cat Day” in Japan. The reason is very typically Japanese. It comes from a wordplay using the number 2, which can be read as “nyan,” the sound of a cat’s meow in Japanese. So 2/2/2 becomes “nyan, nyan, nyan.” In Japan, wordplay based on number readings is quite common. For example, November 22 is “Good Couple Day” (ii fūfu), and August 29 is “Yakiniku Day” (yaki niku). These playful ideas have naturally blended into everyday culture, and Cat Day is one of them.
But are cat sounds the same around the world? In Japanese, a cat says “nyaa,” in English it is written as “meow,” and in Chinese it is “miāo.” It is interesting that even though the sound is the same, each language expresses it differently. People interpret animal sounds according to the phonetic patterns of their own language.
