I didn’t adopt a cat… A cat adopted me.

Celine DB

I recently got a cat, but it happened in a very unexpected way.

I have always loved cats and when I was a child I had a wonderful black and white cat named Rocky who lived with me for 7 years. After he passed away, I thought no cat could ever replace him. I never tried to get another cat as there were many cats in the neighbourhood that would visit my house regularly and I would play with them and pet them. That was enough for me.

But things changed last year when my neighbour adopted a new cat with an unusual backstory. He was a black and white cat named Jelly, but the interesting part is that he is originally from France and he was brought to my country, South Africa. His original owner could no longer keep him so my neighbours looked after him and eventually adopted him.

He was very sensitive and scared after being on an aeroplane for so long and my neighbours already had another cat and two big dogs, so it was too noisy and chaotic for him at their house. He visited me every day and spent most of his time with me. My neighbour’s joked that they hardly saw him and he only came home to eat.

Eventually my neighbours offered for me to adopt the cat, as he clearly chose me as the person he wants to live with, and I happily agreed.

He reminds me a lot of my old cat Rocky so it almost seems like fate. He is very smart and very naughty, but he is now my family.
