What inspired me to begin teaching

Weekly Topic: What inspired me to begin teaching

Sabwa

People often ask, “Why did you become a teacher?” Honestly, my first answer is: “Because I love coffee… and teachers drink a lot of it!”

But the real story began years ago when I helped a friend with mathematics. I wasn’t trying to be a teacher I was just explaining it in the simplest way I knew, adding silly examples like, “If you have 5 mangoes and eat 3, you now have 2… and probably a stomachache.” To my surprise, my friend finally understood, and their excited face made me think: “Wait, this is fun!”

Since then, I realized that teaching is not only about textbooks. It’s about turning scary topics into something less frightening, maybe even enjoyable. Over the years, I’ve seen shy students become confident, and learners laugh while making mistakes (sometimes laughing at my mistakes too). That’s when I knew I wasn’t just teaching lessons, I was sharing joy.

So, what inspires me?
It’s those “aha!” moments, the laughter in the middle of a serious lesson, and the magical moment when a student says, “I can do it now!”

In short: I started teaching to help others but I keep teaching because it makes both my students and me a little happier (and maybe a little funnier) every day.
