What Inspired Me to Begin Teaching?

SimoneH

Ever since I was a young girl, my grandmother has been my greatest inspiration. She is one of the best teachers I know. As a child, I faced many hardships, and by the time I was in Grade 1, my reading and math skills were not where they were supposed to be. My grandmother patiently sat with me every day after school, practicing math and reading. Through her encouragement and persistence, I not only caught up but also discovered a love for the English language.

Later in life, I went to live with her. My grandmother taught at a rural school in a poor community, and I saw firsthand the difference she made in the lives of her students—not only academically, but also emotionally. She always told me, “With education and hope, anything is possible.” That belief has stayed with me ever since.

I remember sitting beside her while she marked papers late at night or worked on her lesson plans. She never treated her students as just names on a page—she remembered them as individuals. Even now, as an elderly woman, many of her former students still contact her or greet her warmly if they meet her in the supermarket, and she remembers each one.

Today, she lives with dementia, but she will always remain my greatest teacher and my inspiration. The love, patience, and hope she gave her students—and me—are what sparked my own passion for teaching.
