海と山、豊かな自然に囲まれた島、カナダ・バンクーバー島。

夫の実家のあるバンクーバー島に5月に帰省しました。

この島での日常は、日本では経験できないことが普通にあります。

カナダ・バンクーバー島の夫の実家では

朝の散歩中に熊のフンを見つけることも。

私はまだ熊を見たことがありませんが、、、

今回の帰省中

夫と仲の良い従兄弟たちが、ホームパーティーに週末遊びにきました。

本当はその日、彼らの両親（夫の叔父さん叔母さん）も一緒に来る予定だったのですが、家を出る直前に叔母さんが転んでしまい、足の指を骨折してしまってその日は来られませんでした。

私と夫に会いたがっていた叔母さんのところへ

後日お見舞いに行こうという話になりました。

　お見舞い訪問の日の午前中、叔母さんから一通のメッセージが届きました。

「ゴミ箱荒らしに熊が出たから、予定を明日にしてくれるー？！」との連絡がっっ。

地元ではよくあることのようで？？、笑、、、

誰もパニックにはならず、

普通に予定変更（今回は予定合わずキャンセル）。

…熊でキャンセル、なんて日本じゃまずないですね（笑）

また別の日には、島の日本人の友人が、

車で通りすがりにりんごの木の下でりんごを食べてる熊を見かけたそう。とにかく怖くてすぐに離れたとか。。

義理の両親もつい最近、2人で散歩中に遠くに熊が見えたからそそくさ帰ったと。

こういう日常こそ「今この島にいる」ことのリアルさを感じさせてくれました。笑

A Humorous Trip Back to Vancouver Island

In May, I went back to my husband’s family home on Vancouver Island.

Everyday life on this island includes things you would never experience in Japan.

At my husband’s family home on Vancouver Island, it’s not unusual to spot bear droppings during a morning walk.

I still haven’t seen a bear myself… but during this visit, my husband’s cousins, who are very close to him, came over for a weekend home party.

Originally, their parents (my husband’s uncle and aunt) were supposed to join as well, but just before leaving the house, the aunt fell and broke a toe, so they couldn’t make it that day.

We decided to visit her later for a get-well visit, since she really wanted to see us.

On the morning of the visit, we got a message from the aunt:

“Can we reschedule to tomorrow? A bear got into the trash bins!”

Apparently, this kind of thing happens quite often locally…

No one panicked; we just rescheduled (or rather, canceled for that day).

…A cancellation because of a bear? That’s definitely not something you’d see in Japan! lol

On another day, a Japanese friend of ours on the island saw a bear eating apples under an apple tree while driving by. They said it was so scary they quickly drove away.

Even my in-laws recently spotted a bear from a distance while on a walk and hurried home.

These everyday encounters really make you feel the reality of “being on this island right now.” lol
